Chapter 10: Troubleshooting

Jewel of Arabia: Dreamers has been a work in progress for more than two years now. It has been thoroughly tested and retested many times. In addition, the game is built on top of the very stable Genesis Engine, the powerful system which drives and manages the whole game. But even so, problems can occur. This chapter attempts to address all potential problems you may have with the game.

This chapter of the manual is an ongoing process. It will grow over time to inform you of all known, and also any new problems with the game. Users are encouraged to report problems as they arise so we can fix them or document them here. But please read the following sections before writing us, to see if the problem is already addressed here.

Problems loading the game

If you encounter problems while the game is loading, the first thing you should do is increase the memory allotted to the Jewel of Arabia application. Try increasing memory by 1 MB at a time.

Another reason that the game may not load is because some data files are missing or they have been moved. If you think that this could be the problem, throw away your entire Jewel of Arabia folder and download a new copy of the game. If you got the game on CD-ROM, try reinstalling it from CD first.

And needless to say, DO NOT MOVE or DELETE any of the files in the Jewel of Arabia folder.

Problems with the music

The musical pieces included with Jewel of Arabia were culled from the many fine Arabic and Persian MIDI files available freely on the Web. Because they were not composed specifically for the game, they may occasionally cause problems on some configurations. Some typical problems are repeating notes and random volume changes.

To find out what piece of music is currently playing, view the about screen. This can be accessed via the Apple menu.

Any pieces you experience problems with should be removed from the Jewel Music folder. You may also add any MIDI files you wish to play during the game to this folder, as long as they are in EXACTLY the same format as those provided.

The game runs too slowly

If you have an older Mac and find that the game runs too slowly, there are a number of things you can try that should make the game more fun to play.

First, quit all other applications while you are playing Jewel of Arabia. Programs running in the background still demand processor time and could slow the game down.

Second, go to the game's preferences menu and turn off animation. Doing this will only disable large animations like spell effects, but will speed the game up considerably.

Third, try turning off the music.

And finally, do not run the game off of CD-ROM. Copy the Jewel of Arabia folder to your hard drive and run the game from there.

Problems while running the game

There are currently no known problems running Jewel of Arabia on any Macintosh Power PC or 68040.

If you experience a problem while playing the game, first try increasing the memory allotted to the Jewel of Arabia application.

If this does not solve your problem, send email to us at qnote@kagi.com. Please try to be as specific as possible when reporting problems.
